Site & Premises Requirements
Minimum room size requirements vary depending on the type and model of sunbed you choose. Laydown sunbeds may differ in length and width, meaning some models require more room for clearance than others for ventilation, maintenance and client use.
For example, whilst a Luxura V6 stand-up unit may fit comfortably within a room, a V8 may not be able to due to differences in floor construction and overall height. This makes accurate measurements essential before you commit to a specific sunbed model.
It’s not enough for a sunbed to only fit inside the treatment room, it also needs to physically reach it. Door widths, hallway dimensions, ceiling heights, and tight turns must all be assessed to ensure smooth delivery and installation. Many challenges arise, not from room size but from restricted access points. Ensuring doors are wide enough and routes are clear is a crucial part of the process.
All sunbed premises must display clear and compliant safety signage, including mandatory age-restriction notices stating that under-18’s are not permitted to use sunbeds. Additional health and safety signage may also be required to inform clients of exposure risks and safe usage guidelines. These requirements are set out by The Sunbed Association (TSA) and relevant regulatory bodies, and failure to comply can results in enforcement action.
We will require you to have fully operational electrics in place prior to installation so that we can test your sunbed and make sure that it is working properly before leaving site. This varies depending on the type and number of sunbeds you are looking to acquire. For the rare occasions that a salon will only ever require, one laydown and one standup from our rental fleet, they will be fine using single-phase electric.
For those requiring more or larger equipment, a fully operational 3-phase supply is needed prior to installation. You will need to plan to have this in place promptly to receive an installation date from us. This can take a long time to sort out so the sooner the better when it comes to planning for your electrics.

Here are just a few examples of the sunbeds we’ve successfully installed in salons across the UK. This carousel showcases the variety of equipment we supply and install, highlighting our hands-on approach, attention to detail, and commitment to delivering reliable, professional installations that help salons look great and perform at their best from day one.

Safety, Regulations & Compliance
In the UK, there is a legal age restriction for commercial sunbed use: no one under the age of 18 is allowed to use, be offered the use of, or be present in a restricted sunbed area on business premises. This is set out in the Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 for England and Wales, similar provisions in Scotland under the Public Health etc. (Scotland) Act 2008, and corresponding regulations in Northern Ireland. Allowing an under-18 to use or be offered a sunbed is a criminal offence for the salon/operator.
There is a regulation governing the maximum UV output of sunbeds, dubbed 0.3 tanning. This is an approved limit of UV output by the EU and complies with all British and European consumer safety regulations. All salons should adhere to this regulation as it delivers the same tanning effect as the mid-day Mediterranean sun without the risk of burning. Regulating this output not only promotes safe tanning to your customers but it is also helping fight the age-old stereotype associated with the tanning industry.
Salon owners have a legal and professional responsibility to carry out a UV risk assessment when offering sunbed services. This assessment helps identify potential risks associated with UV exposure for both clients and staff and ensures that appropriate control measures are in place to minimise those risks.
Sunbed Selection & Layout
Selecting the right sunbeds is a key decision that will impact all areas of your salon. When choosing between laydowns or standups, consider your target clientele, available space and budget. Both fit in the modern salon and appeal to different customers. A 2:1 or 3:1 setup of laydowns to stand ups have worked very well in salons across the UK.
The varied tanning option gives customers the choice best fitted to them. Also, both a laydown and a standup will tan differently. Customers can sometimes experience dead spots from the pressure of laying down on the acrylic. You can then suggest to them to use one of your standups that will provide the coverage that the laydown had not.
This example shows a potential layout design for a new/existing salon.
Key Points To Consider:
- The corridor is wide enough for each sunbed to fit down, during installation and removal.
- There is ample room in the rooms for each sunbed for both the installation process and maintenance work that may need to be carried out.
- There is also room for amenities for your customers; a seat, a mirror, cleaning wipes etc.
- There is a larger gap towards the foot end of each bed, this allows for access to each rotary isolator switch.
- Ventilation is directly above the exhaust of your sunbeds.
Layout Best Practices
A well-designed sunbed salon layout balances safety, privacy, comfort, and efficiency. We highly recommend the utilising space-saving cubicles and shutters for each sunbed, this ensures not only are they fully enclosed for customer privacy but the ease of access for our engineers is far better, reducing downtimes during repairs and tube changes. Each room should allow clear space around the bed – this allows clients to enter and exit comfortably, and staff can clean, maintain, and access emergency isolators without obstruction.
If you have doors, these should open outwards or slide to avoid restricting movement. One or two inches off the bottom of these can vastly improve airflow to your sunbed, helping to regulate room temperatures. Each room should be large enough for at least a mirror and some seating for customer comfort and satisfaction. Something that is forgotten when planning your salon is corridors.
Corridors should be wide enough to ensure sunbeds can be installed or removed, to prevent congestion during peak times. Reception areas should have clear sightlines to cubicle entrances for supervision whilst still maintaining client discretion. Overall, your layout will depend on the size of your salon and your level of investment in equipment. The best layout will incorporate the ideas above to fit your salon.

Skin Types
Understanding your clients’ skin type can be confusing – however is crucial for providing a safe and effective tanning experience. Skin type determines…
By assessing your clients’ skin type correctly, you can protect their skin whilst also helping them achieve the best results.
- Ask clients about previous sun exposure and tanning history.
- Monitor for redness or irritation during sessions.
- Provide advice on hydration and moisturising to maintain skin health.
- Keep records of each client’s skin type and session history to ensure safety and consistency.
Client Consent & Health Screening
Ensuring client safety begins before they even step into the sunbed. All clients should complete a consent form prior to their first session, acknowledging that they understand the tanning process, potential risks, and the importance of following safe exposure guidelines. Alongside consent, a health screening is essential to identify any contraindications that may make sunbed use unsafe, such as certain medications, skin conditions, or medical histories.
By carefully reviewing this information, your salon can provide tailored advice, recommend appropriate session times, and prevent potential health issues.
Cleaning
After each session, your sunbed should be wiped over with a non-alcoholic cleaner. We recommend using TanClean, this gentle but effective solution will keep your sunbed clean and won’t damage your precious acrylics.
Depending on how busy your salon is you may need a weekly/bi-weekly clean of your room. Think of your sunbed as a giant hoover, it will suck up dust from all around your salon and accumulate inside the room.
Finally, your sunbed engineers will have pointed out to you the necessary steps to access your sunbed’s filter mats. These collect some of the dust that has been sucked up, simply take them out and place on the floor and run the hoover head up and down them, then place them back in their place. These filter mats can deteriorate over time, as a salon owner it is your responsibilty to order replacements to avoid clogging your sunbed with dust.
Maintenance
Daily/Weekly Checks
Regular maintenance is essential to ensure your sunbeds can operate safely and efficiently whilst also delivery consistent results for clients. A structured and scheduled maintenance routine will help to extend the lifespan of your equipment but also maintain compliance with safety regulations.
Daily checks should be carried out before the salon opens to ensure the sunbed is clean and fully operational. This includes, inspecting acrylics, fans, timers and emergency stop functions. We also recommend thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting all contact surfaces. Weekly checks should entail more of a detailed inspection of lamps, ventilation systems, filters and any electrical components.
Lamp Replacements
Over time, lamps lose their effectiveness so to maintain optimal tanning performance and consistent results, lamps should be replaced in line with the manufacturer’s recommended usage hours.
Servicing & Inspections
In addition to routine checks, sunbeds should be professionally serviced at regular intervals by qualified technicians. A planned servicing schedule helps identify potential issues early, and ensures everything is working as it should be. By following a structured maintenance and servicing schedule, salons can protect their investment, ensure client safety and deliver a consistently high-quality tanning experience.

Setting up a successful salon is about far more than simply installing equipment – it’s about careful planning, ensuring compliance, inviting presentation, and ongoing commitment to safety and quality.
